~New assignment, page 22 in the Essential Elements book, songs 77,
78, 79. Practice learning to read the down bow and up bow signs, and continue working on Note-reading. Long bows for quarter notes and short bows for eighths.
~Also review song 76 on page 21.
~Always play with a good bow hand! (See below.)
~Check the violin basics below to make sure that
you are holding the violin and bow correctly.
VIOLIN BASICS ~Work on the left hand position when holding the violin. Remember to keep the thumb straight and relaxed (not gripping
the violin). Your hand should be near the scroll of the violin, and not too close to the body. Make a "V" shape
with your left thumb and fingers (your palm should face you), and use this as a guide to your hand shape when you hold the
instrument.
~Use the Right Hand for Bow exercises! Spider push-ups, Pencil Pick-ups (pencil pick-ups can be practiced
two ways, both with and without the pencil), and Rabbit Face. No cheating! Use only fingers to do the exercises; no wrist,
forearm, or full arm. For Rabbit Face, have the middle fingers over the thumbnail, curved fingers to make a circle shape.
~Practice holding the bow! Curve both thumb and pinkie. Thumb goes on the silver D ring on the bow, pinkie in
the "pinkie house" Middle fingers hug the frog, but are not curved.
~Practicing
how to hold the violin (on left shoulder, with jaw in the black jaw rest, violin parallel to the floor, violin in front and
not too far out to the left, stand straight)
